Understanding Your Responsibilities as an Employer: What MOM Expects from You

Humanskills Employment Agency

Hiring a Foreign Domestic Worker (FDW) is not just about getting help at home, it’s also about taking on the role of a responsible employer. In Singapore, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) outlines clear guidelines to ensure the fair treatment and welfare of domestic helpers. As an employer, knowing your duties isn’t just a legal requirement, it also helps create a positive, long-term working relationship.

At Humanskills Employment Agency, we’re here to support employers in understanding their obligations and building a respectful home environment.

 1. Ensure a Valid Work Permit

Every FDW must have a valid Work Permit issued by MOM. Employers must also cancel the permit promptly if the employment ends.

Tip:

Let your maid agency handle the application and cancellation process. Always ensure paperwork is properly updated to avoid penalties.

2. Provide Proper Accommodation and Privacy

Your helper is entitled to safe and adequate housing. This means a clean space, proper ventilation, and reasonable privacy.

Tip:

Her sleeping area should not be in the storeroom, with children, or in shared spaces like the living room. Make her feel safe and respected in your home.

3. Provide Sufficient Food and Rest

Under MOM guidelines, employers must provide three proper meals a day and allow helpers sufficient rest, including at least one day off per week (or compensation in-lieu).

Tip:

Ask about her food preferences. For off days, agree on arrangements in advance. It’s important to let her recharge rested helpers perform better.

4. Medical Care and Insurance

FDWs must undergo a six-monthly medical check-up (6ME) and must be covered under medical and personal accident insurance as required by MOM.

Tip:

Keep track of 6ME appointments and ensure she sees a doctor if unwell. You are responsible for her medical bills, so get the required insurance coverage.

5. Send Her for the Settling-In Programme (SIP)

First-time FDWs must attend the SIP within the first few days of arrival in Singapore. This is a MOM requirement to help them understand safety, laws, and rights.

Tip:

Coordinate with your agency to ensure this is completed. It’s a one-day course, but mandatory for continued employment.

6. Treat Her Fairly and with Respect

Singapore takes the welfare of domestic workers seriously. Any form of abuse physical, verbal, or emotional is strictly prohibited. Employers who mistreat their helpers may face fines, jail, or be permanently barred from hiring again.

Tip:

Practice clear, respectful communication. Praise her efforts when due, and address concerns calmly. A happy helper is a productive one.
